The Layer 2 IXP was established in 2006. The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) is known for a neutral and not-for-profit organization focusing at facilitating the exchange of internet traffic among the ISPs and other network operators in Nigeria. The IXPN is a key player in the global Internet ecosystem and a hub for many other important networks in Africa. By allowing ISPs and other networks to exchange traffic, IXPN helps to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of the internet in Nigeria. It enhances the possibilities the internet is accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of their geographic location.
The primary goal of IXPN is to reduce the cost and complexity of Internet traffic exchange in Nigeria, by allowing ISPs to directly interconnect their networks and exchange traffic locally, instead of routing traffic through international gateways. The infrastructure assists to make Internet access more affordable for everyone, regardless of their financial situation. This can increase access to educational materials and other resources that can bridge the information gap.
IXPN provides a range of services and infrastructure to support Internet traffic exchange, including physical infrastructure such as data centers, routers, and switches, as well as virtual infrastructure such as route servers and peering databases. It also provides technical assistance and training to its members to ensure that they can effectively utilize the IXPN infrastructure and services.
Today, IXPN is the largest and most active Internet Exchange Point in West Africa, with over 120 members, including ISPs, content providers, and telecommunications companies. Our system is instrumental in enhancing the quality and accessibility of Internet services in Nigeria, while also serving as a crucial hub for Internet traffic exchange throughout the region.
